DNA Test Uncovers Incredible Family Secret: Man Discovers His Biological Father Is a Five-Time Grammy Winner

St. Louis resident Michael Gossling spent decades wondering about his biological roots. He had always known that he was adopted, but he could never have imagined that one day a DNA test would reveal an astonishing truth: his biological father was none other than legendary musician and five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald.

“I always knew I was adopted. I had a wonderful childhood. I couldn’t have chosen two better people to raise me,” the man told KMOV St. Louis.

The family mystery began to unravel nearly six decades later, when an unknown half-brother decided to take a 23andMe genetic test.

“Thirty-six hours later, he got an email notification that said, ‘Michael Gossling, half-brother, St. Louis.’ And that’s how it all started,” Gossling recalled.

On his 58th birthday, Gossling met his biological mother in person for the first time. He later got in touch with his biological father by phone. During their conversation, Gossling asked what he did for a living.

His father explained that he was a musician and would be going on tour in St. Louis that summer.

That was when Gossling finally summoned the courage to ask the question that would change his life forever.

“And then I finally asked, ‘Are you Michael McDonald?’ And he said, ‘Yes, I’m afraid so,’” Gossling recalled.

It was then that he discovered that his biological father was 74-year-old Michael McDonald, the acclaimed singer, songwriter and former member of The Doobie Brothers, who has won five Grammy Awards.

According to KMOV, both of Gossling’s biological parents were just 14 years old when he was conceived.

For McDonald, learning what had become of his son after all those years was an incredibly emotional experience — and, at the same time, a source of profound relief. During a FaceTime conversation, McDonald admitted that he had never been able to forget about his son.

“I always carried this sense of guilt with me. But to find out that he was okay, that he had a good life — and a life that I wouldn’t have been able to provide for him at that point in my own life — that was an enormous gift to me,” the musician said.

McDonald also made it clear that, in his eyes, the real heroes of the story were his son’s adoptive parents.

“The real rock stars of this story are his adoptive parents. They gave Michael everything a child needs: love and a sense of security,” he said.

Soon afterward, father and son finally met in person, turning a decades-long family mystery into a long-awaited reunion.

“He just opened his arms, gave me a big hug and said that he loved me. And I said the same thing back,” Gossling recalled.

“It was incredible, absolutely incredible — to see Michael and finally meet my son after all these years of thinking about him,” McDonald said.

But the surprises did not end there. As a result of the unexpected reunion, McDonald suddenly discovered that he had also become a grandfather.

“Yes, I’m still trying to process it. What a gift,” the musician said with a laugh. “My daughter-in-law is exactly the kind of person any parent could dream of. And the kids are just wonderful. I’m incredibly proud of them.”
