Kathleen Turner has played down the frenzy surrounding Michael Douglas’s revelation that the two had an affair while filming Romancing the Stone — a relationship the famous co-stars kept secret for decades.

The 72-year-old actress offered a brief and remarkably lighthearted response to the unexpected revelation.

“Good heavens, what a fuss about something that happened 40 years ago!” Turner joked in a statement to People. “I love Michael, and I look forward to reading the book.”

The 82-year-old Douglas revealed the secret in his upcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, bringing an end to four decades of denying that the pair had a romantic relationship.

At the time, the actor, known for his roles in Wall Street and Fatal Attraction, was married to Diandra Luker. However, the couple were living separately and, according to Douglas, both were involved in other relationships.

In his memoir, Douglas writes that before meeting Turner, he had been involved with Romancing the Stone screenwriter Diane Thomas. He describes Turner as “smart, funny and sexy.”

According to Douglas, he and Turner felt an immediate and powerful attraction. “We were immediately attracted to each other” and “truly fell in love,” he writes, adding that they went to great lengths to keep their relationship secret from everyone on set — particularly their co-star Danny DeVito.

Douglas insists it was more than a fleeting affair. “First we found each other as friends, then as co-stars and finally as lovers,” the actor writes.

After a grueling day of filming in the jungle, he says, he would secretly sneak into Turner’s hotel room once everyone else had gone to sleep.

The romance, however, soon came to an end. Diandra Luker arrived on set with the couple’s young son, Cameron. Douglas’s wife spoke to Turner and made it clear that she and the actor were still married.

Turner, Douglas writes, “didn’t want to interfere,” so they decided to end the relationship.

“I went back to Diandra,” he admits in the book. “I did it for Cameron, but we shouldn’t have gotten back together. After that first separation, things between us were never the same again.”

Douglas and Luker eventually divorced in 1995. The actor later married Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Meanwhile, Turner and Douglas remained close and continued to appear together at public events decades after the release of Romancing the Stone. Judging by Turner’s reaction, the actress would rather regard their long-ago romance as a chapter that has long since been closed — despite Douglas’s confession reigniting enormous public interest 40 years later.
