12:32 8 October, 2026The personal life of FBI Director Kash Patel unexpectedly became a matter of public interest after his engagement to 27-year-old country singer Alexis Wilkins. The couple’s relationship had already attracted attention because of their age gap, Patel’s use of FBI aircraft for travel and the heightened security provided to his fiancée. Now, a new controversy has erupted around their upcoming wedding.
As a Slate columnist sarcastically noted, he could not recall another instance in which an FBI director had made headlines because of his own engagement — and, he added, he preferred it when things stayed that way.
“How much are we actually supposed to know about the personal lives of the people who lead our law enforcement agencies?” the writer asked.
But, in the journalist’s view, Patel is a “product of the Trump administration,” and members of Trumpworld, he argued, have a talent for turning their “not-so-tidy personal lives” into public spectacles. That, he wrote, was why he eventually had to pay attention to Patel’s relationship with Wilkins, even though he had “tried very hard not to.”
“Went and involved the law”
Patel and Wilkins began dating in early 2023 after meeting at a party in Nashville in 2022. Their relationship attracted particular attention after Patel was appointed FBI director in 2025.
Wilkins announced their engagement on October 4, posting a black-and-white photo of the couple and showing off her engagement ring.
“Went and involved the law,” she captioned the post, joking about her fiancé’s profession. Patel shared the post, responding with heart and ring emojis.
The caption particularly amused the Slate writer.
“I don’t like these people, but, at the end of the day, I can’t seriously fault a 27-year-old woman for coming up with a pretty clever Instagram caption that she probably spent half her life waiting for the opportunity to post. Good job on this one thing, Alexis,” he wrote sarcastically.
After announcing the engagement, Wilkins continued sharing details of the celebrations. On Instagram Stories, she posted a photo of wedding-themed glitter with the caption: “Yayyyyy! First cute little bridal lunch.”
Slate described this as the “universal language of future brides,” supposedly meaning: “Please continue giving me attention because I’m engaged.”
The writer admitted that the situation left him with mixed feelings: “For a woman in her twenties, this is completely normal behavior, and I really wish this girl were engaged to anyone but this particular man — then we could all simply be happy for her. But alas.”
FBI plane, dates and wedding expenses
The couple’s relationship has been under intense media scrutiny for some time. After Patel became FBI director, he faced criticism over his use of government resources, including travel on bureau aircraft that, according to reports, had no obvious connection to official duties.
One of the most widely discussed incidents occurred when an FBI plane flew Patel to Pennsylvania for a professional wrestling event where Wilkins performed the national anthem. After her performance, she posted photos of the two of them posing together with a giant gold championship belt.
Wilkins also received FBI security, which became another source of criticism.
The Slate writer had already asked at the time: “Are taxpayers now going to have to pay for the wedding, too?”
Following the wedding of Donald Trump Jr. in the Bahamas, which attracted attention amid reports of Russian financing, the journalist sarcastically added: “It seems like nothing can surprise us anymore.”
Especially, he said, given the FBI plane controversy: “I’m even afraid to imagine how much of my personal tax dollars will ultimately go toward these wedding festivities.”
‘Spy’ allegations
Amid the heightened attention surrounding her relationship, Wilkins herself became involved in legal proceedings.
She filed defamation lawsuits against several conservative influencers and podcast hosts who spread or suggested a theory that she was allegedly an Israeli spy.
Wilkins is seeking $5 million from former FBI special agent Kyle Seraphin, host of The Kyle Seraphin Show. During an August 2025 podcast episode, he did not name her directly but referred to Patel’s girlfriend, who was allegedly “half his age,” and called her a “honeypot” and a “former Mossad agent.”
Wilkins’ attorneys said Seraphin had “maliciously lied about Alexis Wilkins,” falsely claiming that the American country singer was an agent of a foreign government tasked with manipulating the FBI director and inducing him to engage in compromising conduct.
Seraphin’s defense argued that his comments were “sarcastic, humorous and hyperbolic” and protected by free speech. A judge later declined to dismiss the case, and the litigation is ongoing.
Wilkins also sought $5 million from former Republican Senate candidate Sam Parker and conservative influencer Elijah Schaffer. The case against Parker was dismissed because the court lacked jurisdiction, while Schaffer later retracted his statements and apologized to Wilkins.
“I’m Christian. I’m Armenian.”
Wilkins herself publicly rejected the theory that she had ties to Israel.
“I’m not Jewish. I’m Christian. I’m Armenian. So I don’t really understand how we even got here. I’ve never been to Israel. I would love to go. I don’t even have a stamp in my passport. I’m just as confused about all of this as everybody else,” she said on Katie Miller’s podcast.
The statement is particularly notable because Wilkins herself publicly emphasized her Armenian heritage while denying the rumors.
In an interview with the Independent Women’s Forum, the singer said her grandfather served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was the son of Armenian immigrants who had fled the Armenian Genocide.
According to Wilkins, the history of the Armenian Genocide has a direct personal significance for her family. In another interview, she explained that because of the tragedy, her grandfather “didn’t know any of his aunts and uncles.”
From Nashville to the FBI
Wilkins and Patel met in Nashville in 2022 and began dating in early 2023. She supported him during his Senate confirmation hearings and attended the swearing-in ceremony following his appointment as FBI director.
Wilkins is a country singer and political commentator who has ties to conservative organizations and regularly appears at political events. Patel, 46, became FBI director in 2025.
Their romance, which might once have been viewed as an ordinary relationship between two public figures, has since Patel’s appointment turned into a story involving politics, government resources, security, lawsuits, conspiracy theories and now an engagement.
Alexis Wilkins herself seems to understand just how unusual the whole story has become. “None of this was on my bingo card, but here we are,” she previously joked about her life after her relationship with Patel came under the spotlight.
