Luxury French Riviera Hotel Declares War on Influencers: Phone Photography Faces a Ban

The legendary Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on the French Riviera, a longtime retreat for famous politicians, writers and members of royal families, is introducing strict restrictions on photography. The move comes as influencers increasingly turn one of France’s most prestigious hotels into a backdrop for social media content.

Located on the rocky coastline of Antibes, the hotel charges up to £28,000 per night for some of its rooms. Yet neither its eye-watering prices nor its storied history has deterred visitors eager to capture picture-perfect shots by the pool, in the restaurants and amid its picturesque gardens.

According to the Daily Mail, some guests arrived carrying entire bags of outfits, changed clothes several times and staged full-blown photo shoots around the resort. In response, staff decided to tighten the rules to restore guests’ ability to relax in peace.

The hotel has also attracted attention thanks to a TikTok trend in which influencers film themselves tackling its famous obstacle course above the sea. The attraction, which has been around for nearly a century, features a rope swing and a suspended ladder.

However, management decided that guests’ pursuit of the perfect shot had gone too far.

Hotel manager Sophie Voland told Travel Weekly that some restaurant visitors were spending more time taking photographs than enjoying their meals.

“We have many regular guests who come back again and again. They see this hotel not just as a hotel, but as their summer home,” she said.

According to Voland, management had to find a solution that would protect the resort’s traditional atmosphere and guests’ privacy.

The official Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc website now states: “In order to preserve the peace and privacy of all our guests, photo shoots are not permitted.” Anyone wishing to obtain permission to take photographs is advised to contact the concierge.

From Picasso and Hemingway to Instagram Stars

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc has long been regarded as one of the defining symbols of luxury on the French Riviera. Over the years, it has welcomed members of the Kennedy, Churchill and Windsor families, as well as celebrated guests including Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The hotel experienced a fresh wave of influencer attention in 2023, when Sofia Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie, married music executive Elliot Grainge there.

Since then, the resort has become an especially sought-after setting for social media posts. Bloggers, models and entertainment industry figures are among those eager to capture themselves against its famous scenery.

But popularity comes at a price. The hotel’s management appears determined to preserve its reputation as a secluded luxury retreat rather than allow it to become an endless photo opportunity.
