Meghan Markle reportedly vowed never to wear French designer Roland Mouret’s creations again after his team mistakenly contacted Kate Middleton’s staff to arrange the return of clothing the designer had lent to the Duchess of Sussex. Mouret recounts the incident in his memoir, I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World.

According to the designer, Meghan was furious and called him to confront him over the mistake. “You have no idea what you’ve done! You’ve humiliated me,” she allegedly told him. Mouret said he apologized and explained that a member of his staff had made an error, but the duchess refused to hear him out.

“Now you understand that I can never wear your clothes again,” she reportedly declared.

Mouret and Markle had been close friends since 2015. The designer first met the future duchess at a hotel in Turkey, and several months later, she was the first person to tell him about her romance with Prince Harry, before their relationship became public. Mouret subsequently offered to lend her outfits for official engagements.

The dispute erupted after one of Mouret’s employees contacted Kate Middleton’s team at Kensington Palace to arrange the return of the clothes. The designer explained that the employee had probably chosen that route for convenience, as he had worked with the Princess of Wales for many years.

Later, Mouret spotted Meghan wearing an inexpensive copy of one of his designs and messaged her to say that the choice looked ridiculous. According to him, she replied that they should meet.

A representative for the Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the designer’s claims. In his memoir, Mouret also speaks warmly of Kate Middleton, observing that she would probably prefer to live without constant public attention if she had the choice.
