22:20 20 October, 2026Queen Elizabeth II, who adored chocolate desserts, followed an unusual tradition: she never finished her birthday cake in one sitting, instead savoring it over several days. The revelation comes from former royal chef Darren McGrady, who spent 11 years working for the royal family.
The British monarch died in September 2022 at the age of 96.
According to McGrady, the same chocolate cake was prepared for the Queen every year using an unchanged recipe. It was served twice a year: on her birthday in April and during the official birthday celebrations in June.
“Every year, the same cake, the same recipe: the Queen’s chocolate birthday cake,” the chef recalled.
The recipe had been passed down through generations and, according to McGrady, dated back to the time of Queen Mary, Elizabeth II’s grandmother, who died in 1953.
“I spent 11 years in the royal kitchen, and I couldn’t even begin to count how many times I made that chocolate cake — twice a year,” he admitted.
The dessert perfectly suited Elizabeth II’s tastes, as she was particularly fond of chocolate. It consisted of a light chocolate génoise sponge with a delicate texture, layered with rich dark chocolate ganache and covered with an additional layer of chocolate.
Despite her sweet tooth, the Queen displayed remarkable restraint, according to the chef. A slightly larger cake was prepared so that it would last for several days. After each serving, the dessert was returned to the kitchen and brought back to the table the following day.
Any leftovers were distributed among palace staff.
“Nothing went to waste at Buckingham Palace,” McGrady emphasized.
According to the chef, the Queen was a true chocolate enthusiast and frequently chose chocolate desserts from the palace menu.
“She absolutely loved chocolate. If there was anything chocolate on the menu, that’s what she would choose — especially a dessert called Chocolate Perfection Pie,” he recalled.
