Hollywood actor Kevin Pollak has recalled an unexpected moment from the set of the iconic 1992 courtroom drama A Few Good Men. According to Pollak, Tom Cruise punched Jack Nicholson on the shoulder after an intense courtroom confrontation. But the incident did not turn into a feud — both actors burst out laughing.

Pollak, who also appeared in the film, shared the story on Steve Kmetko’s Still Here Hollywood podcast.

He was referring to the climactic confrontation between Cruise’s character, military lawyer Daniel Kaffee, and Colonel Nathan Jessup, played by Nicholson. The scene features the now-famous line, “You can’t handle the truth!”

According to Pollak, Cruise was moving toward Nicholson during filming, demanding an answer: “I want the truth!” The camera was positioned close to Nicholson’s face, capturing the scene from his character’s point of view. Nicholson was supposed to move closer to the lens, but instead of maintaining a tense expression, he suddenly pulled a ridiculous, almost clown-like face.

“Tom kept acting, stayed in character and carried the scene through to the end, and then he punched Jack Nicholson on the shoulder. And they both laughed,” Pollak recalled.

The actor said the moment was a good reflection of the atmosphere on set.

Directed by Rob Reiner and released in 1992, A Few Good Men follows two Marines accused of murdering a fellow serviceman at the Guantanamo Bay naval base. Kaffee tries to establish whether the defendants were acting under orders from their superiors, who allegedly authorized a so-called “Code Red” — a brutal form of punishment within the unit.

The film also starred Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland and J. T. Walsh. It received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Nicholson.
