Time by the Laws of the Cosmos: Van Cleef & Arpels Unveils Watch with Moving Sun and Moon

French luxury jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels has introduced a new watch, the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune, which links timekeeping to the movement of celestial bodies. On the dial, the Sun gives way to the Moon, while a separate mechanism displays the phases of the lunar cycle.

The design combines white and yellow gold, mother-of-pearl and deep blue aventurine glass. The latter evokes the night sky, providing a backdrop for the astronomical composition. The model’s defining feature, however, lies not so much in its materials as in the engineering behind the dial.

The watch brings together two mechanisms. One tracks the transition between day and night over a 24-hour cycle, with the Sun gradually moving across the dial before giving way to the Moon. The second displays the phases of the Moon. The discs move at different speeds, creating the impression of celestial bodies changing places while allowing the wearer to follow the lunar cycle.

According to the brand, developing the astronomical mechanism took four years. The watch is an example of how complex engineering can become an integral part of a timepiece’s design rather than remaining hidden inside the case.

Astronomical themes have a prominent place in Van Cleef & Arpels’ history. In 1929, the maison introduced a pocket watch featuring a lunar phase display, followed in 2008 by the Jour Nuit collection, built around the transition between day and night. The new model continues this tradition, shifting the focus beyond the solar and lunar cycles to include the phases of the Moon.
