10:30 29 October, 2026President Donald Trump joked on Tuesday, Oct. 27, that the “Trump Dividend” — a conditional $5,000 cash payment he has proposed for every American adult — would buy a hamburger and a small dessert at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach, Fla, PEOPLE writes.
His remarks come a week before midterm elections, which have been dominated by the issue of affordability, as many voters face rising costs for fuel, groceries, housing and healthcare, among other living expenses. U.S. gasoline and energy prices have increased since Trump launched a war with Iran in February. The elections will determine whether Republicans maintain control of Congress.
Trump has pledged to send every adult citizen $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections, with the caveat that the money must be spent in the United States. He has not said how the government could track where people used the funds. The promise would cost more than $1 trillion and likely require congressional approval.
Trump was in Texas for back-to-back rallies in Corpus Christi and Lubbock on Tuesday in support of Republican candidates, including the state’s attorney general Ken Paxton, who is competing against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico for Senate.
“You could even come to Mar-a-Lago, I said it the other night. You’ll be my guest at Mar-a-Lago,” Trump said at the rally in Corpus Christi. “The problem is that for $5,000 the most you’ll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert.”
“I’m not even sure you could buy that,” he added. “No, don’t go there. It’s not a good place if you’re price conscious.”
Mar-a-Lago is a 20-acre members-only, private club and estate.
According to a recent poll from The Associated Press -NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, the economy and cost of living top the list of concerns for voters in the upcoming election, followed by healthcare.
