11:39 6 November, 2026Organizers of the 2027 Met Gala have unveiled the theme for the fashion world’s most prestigious annual event, but the unexpected concept has already sparked mixed reactions online. Fashion fans are divided, with some embracing the idea while others have dismissed it as strange and disappointing. The announcement comes months after the cancellation of an exhibition dedicated to designer John Galliano amid renewed controversy, the Daily Mail reports.
According to Vogue, the theme of the 2027 Met Gala is “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” The exhibition will explore the overlooked beauty and aesthetic appeal of everyday clothing.
The focus will be on familiar wardrobe staples such as T-shirts, jeans, trench coats, hoodies and puffer jackets. Andrew Bolton, the exhibition’s curator, said the project would encourage visitors to look at ordinary garments from a fresh perspective.
The exhibition will explore two sides of contemporary fashion: how designers transform classic wardrobe staples into high-fashion creations, and how everyday or even disposable materials — including paper, aluminium and plastic — can be turned into wearable works of art.
However, the concept has already triggered heated debate on social media.
“Why are Met Gala themes always so damn convoluted and ridiculous? Who even comes up with them?” one X user complained.
Another admitted they were curious to see how celebrities would interpret the idea of everyday fashion without making it look as though they had simply walked out of the house in whatever they happened to be wearing.
“This is going to be even more chaotic than last year’s gala,” another user predicted.
Others, however, welcomed the concept. “This could produce some genuinely interesting looks,” one fashion fan wrote.
Another commenter joked: “Paying all that money for the Met Gala just to turn up in a hoodie.”
Held annually on the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the event brings together some of the biggest names in entertainment, film and fashion, who showcase elaborate outfits inspired by the chosen theme. It is widely regarded as one of the most important dates on the global fashion calendar.
The 2027 exhibition was initially expected to focus on 65-year-old British designer John Galliano. However, news emerged in late August that the project had been cancelled following a wave of criticism.
Galliano became embroiled in a major scandal in 2010 after making antisemitic and racist remarks to two women at a Paris café. Footage of the incident quickly circulated online, and the designer was subsequently dismissed from his position as creative director of Dior.
In September 2011, a French court found him guilty of making racist and antisemitic remarks during two separate incidents. He also lost his Legion of Honour distinction and his own fashion label.
Galliano later issued a public apology. In 2014, he returned to the fashion industry as creative director of Maison Margiela, spending the following years working to rebuild his reputation.
In a statement addressing the exhibition’s cancellation, the designer thanked the Metropolitan Museum of Art, its director Max Hollein, curator Andrew Bolton and Anna Wintour for the honour. However, he acknowledged that staging the exhibition under the circumstances would have been inappropriate.
Galliano also stressed that he continued to take responsibility for the pain his past remarks had caused Jewish and Asian communities.
