Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio, 22, has become the first transgender Victoria’s Secret model. She posted on her Instagram a new photo of her in a bathrobe and used the hashtags #campaign, #vspink and #diversity. She is only wearing gold earrings and a couple of necklaces.
A day later, she posted a photo with the same hashtags on her Stories page. Many of her followers thought she was participating in a shooting for a Victoria’s Secret advertisement.
The news comes a year after Chief Marketing Officer of Victoria’s Secret Ed Razek told Vogue that trans and plus size models weren’t right for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.
If you’re asking if we’ve considered putting a transgender model in the show or looked at putting a plus-size model in the show, we have. I don't think we can be all things to all customers. We market to who we sell to, and we don’t market to the whole world. ... 'I don't think we should [have trans models]. The [fashion] show is fantasy. It's a 42-minute entertainment special,” Ed Razek told Vogue last year, according to Daily Mail.
