YEREVAN. – The sad demographic indicators of Armenia are due to growing emigration, infertility, and divorce indicators; but the country’s demographic problems cannot be solved through polygamy.
Sex therapist Vrezh Shahramanyan said the aforementioned, during a press conference on Wednesday, responding to the query as to whether polygamy could change Armenia’s dropping demographic indicators.
In his words, the Armenian nation has stood out by its stable traditions, and it has maintained and crafted its national character; that is to say, legalizing polygamy in Armenia would cause chaos in the country.
“Options should be offered so that infertile couples may find solutions. Treatment is quite expensive today, which in turn leads to a decrease in birth rates. The focus should be put on creating a strong family foundation,” Shahramanyan noted.
On her part, psychologist Sirina Arakelyan expressed a view that Armenia’s demographic problems can be solved by way of providing good conditions for parents and families with many children, and creating privileged conditions and providing financial assistance to conduct business, or other activities in the country.
“Adopting and localizing the model of another culture can cause quite a ridiculous situation, [and] seem uncalled-for in the Armenian society. Polygamy is not close to the psychology of Armenian women; numerous Armenian women would not accept [it],” Arakelyan stressed.
