Rafael Vinoly Architects has designed the new international terminal of Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence, Italy. Once completed, the 538,000-square-foot terminal is expected to serve 5.9 million international passengers annually, Archinect said.
The airport's most unique feature is its 19-acre vineyard that rises gently above the building and covers the terminal below. The landscape will feature 38 rows of vineyards, which will contribute to the airport's LEED Platinum rating and symbolize Italy's "rich tradition and innovative spirit."
Wine produced from this vineyard will be aged in specialized cellars under the roof of the terminal.
The terminal will be built in two phases; the first will be completed in 2026, and the second—in 2035.
