Robert Downey Jr. plays 4 characters in new HBO series

Robert Downey Jr. plays four different characters in the new HBO series The Sympathizer. In the official trailer for the upcoming series, the 58-year-old actor looks completely unrecognizable.

The trailer begins with Downey Jr. telling "Captain" Hoa Xuande, "Welcome to the world of espionage!" Xuande, whose character describes himself as a "synthesis of incompatibilities," uses his skills to become a spy. Downey plays his handler. Later in the trailer, it is revealed that "The Captain," working for the CIA and Viet Cong, may be a double agent.

A logline provided by The Hollywood Reporter describes the series as "a spy thriller and cross-cultural satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he discovers his spy days It's not over yet."

The series will premiere on April 18.
