The pocket watch that belonged to the richest passenger aboard the Titanic has sold at auction in England for $1.46 million, breaking the record for an item associated with the 1912 disaster.
The buyer of John Jacob Astor IV's Waltham pocket watch was an American. The watch was originally valued at £150,000.
A watch engraved with the initials JJA was found with Astor's body when his remains were discovered days after the sinking of the Titanic. He was found also with a diamond ring, gold and diamond cufflinks, 225 pounds in British notes, and $2,440.
“Astor is known as the richest passenger aboard the Titanic and was considered one of the richest men in the world at the time, with a net worth of approximately $87 million (equivalent to several billion dollars today),” the auction house said.
