New York's Times Square tops list of world’s worst tourist traps

19:27, May 8

New York's iconic Times Square has topped the list of the world’s worst tourist traps.

By the end of 2024, 64.5 million tourists are expected to visit New York City—just a couple of million short of the record 66.6 million in 2019, with almost all of them guaranteed to at least stroll through Times Square. And according to a new poll, they'll hate it!

Preply, an online language learning platform, analyzed scores of visitor reviews of 81 tourist attractions around the world to find out how much they either loved or hated each one.

The heart of the Big Apple received the worst results as the "most overrated tourist trap" in the world.

Reviewers complained about the crowds and called the LED-lit area dirty and boring. “It’s impossible to move. Too stressful to enjoy”, “High hopes and expectations and great disappointment.”

The dubious prize comes as a result of an alarming spike in street crime in the area, as well as a Covid pandemic-induced retail decline that appears to threaten the area's hard-won modern reputation as a safe and vibrant place.

Other sites that disappointed visitors were Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, and the La Rambla pedestrian area in Barcelona. Even Iceland's beautiful Blue Lagoon scored low in the ratings.
