This year's Venice Biennale will be held in April. The event, to be held for the 60th time, may be one of the most memorable ones to date for a number of reasons.
On the one hand, the spotlight will be on indigenous artists who will represent the main pavilions—from Jeffrey Gibson (USA) and Gliceria Tupinamba (Brazil) to Eddie Martinez from San Marino, reports Hypebeast.
On the other hand, concerns about censorship continue to grow both in relation to the biennale and in the art world in general, with pro-Palestine artists and museums being censored for showing support for Palestine amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Biennale curator Adriano Pedrosa has announced a list of 331 artists who will be exhibiting later this spring. The number of artists represented in this year's biennale, entitled "Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere," exceeds the 2022 figure by more than 100.
“In this context, the expression ‘foreigners everywhere’ has several meanings,” Pedrosa said during the conference. “First of all, wherever you go and wherever you are, you will always meet foreigners. They - we - are everywhere. Secondly, no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly and deep down a stranger. … However, this expression can also be seen as a motto, a slogan, a call to action, a cry of excitement, joy or fear: ‘Foreigners are everywhere.’”
This year Venice Biennale will run between April 20 and November 24.
