Sharon Stone has criticized Johnny Depp's artistic abilities. The Hollywood star has given up acting to develop her painting skills—and she has expressed skepticism about Depp's art collection, which has raked in millions in 2022.
Stone rekindled her passion for the arts during the pandemic and decided to devote herself full-time to the arts after not being offered roles that she felt were worthy of her talent. Now she has opened her own exhibition in Berlin, and in April another one will open in San Francisco.
While she admitted that her quick success in art can "probably" be attributed to her fame, the actress told The Guardian that there are several obstacles as she doesn't always paint the art that galleries want.
Also, Stone criticized Depp's art collection, saying: "Johnny Depp prints pictures of people, paints them, signs them and makes a fortune."
She was referring to Depp's Friends and Heroes art collection, which included 780 prints of famous faces, which he sold for about $3.65 million. In 2023, he released even more prints featuring the faces of famous figures such as Heath Ledger and Hunter S. Thompson.
Also last year, Depp unveiled a self-portrait that captured the "emotional exhaustion" he felt during a difficult period in his life. For every sale of the film, the actor donated $200 to Mental Health America.
According to Stone, curators made requests seemingly based on Depp's success, telling the publication: "I've had galleries come up to me and say, 'Could you do a print of your face?' I think it's my duty not to do this. My job is to open a window for other women and keep it open.”
In the past, however, Stone supported Depp during his scandalous divorce from Amber Heard. “I’ve known Johnny since I was a kid, and he’s an amazing guy: sweet, nice, very warm and generous. So I have a feeling it’s more about this young lady,” she said at the time.
