Israeli broadcaster KAN has announced changes in the lyrics of the song "October Rain" proposed for the Eurovision 2024 song contest, dw.com reports.
The Israeli statement comes after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in mid-February classified the lyrics of the song "October Rain" as containing overtly political language, which is prohibited by the contest rules. The song contains lines such as "I'm still wet from the October rain" and "They were all good children, every one of them," which supposedly describe an attack on Israel by Hamas militants on 7 October 2023.
According to the Israeli portal YNET, the local broadcaster proposed "Dance Forever" as an alternative song for the contest, which came second in the jury's vote when selecting a song for Eurovision in Israel, but the EBU rejected this option.
Officially, KAN said it would not change the lyrics of "October Rain", accepting the risks of possible disqualification. However, in a new statement, the broadcaster said it had reconsidered its decision, accepting the position of Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who said that "at a time when those who hate us are trying to oust and boycott us," Israel should "raise its flag in every global forum."
According to KAN's statement, the song "October Rain" will have a new title, "Hurricane." The music will remain the same, but the lyrics will be edited and will be about "a young woman going through a personal crisis".
