About 10 minutes standing ovations and words of admiration: Simon Abgaryan showed his original play for the first time in Yerevan (photo/video)

13:45, December 6

Sundukyan State Academic Theatre was filled with French mood on Thursday, while the audience was silently following, although most of them did not understand the language and tried to read the Armenian subtitles. But that did not prevent them from enjoying French-Armenian actor and director Simon Abgaryan’s performance of “Electra from the world of Miserables,” which took place in Yerevan in the frames of the Yerevan International Theater Festival.

The three-time winner of the Moliere Prize of the French National Theater, “Electra from the world of miserables,” is accompanied by live music and impressive choreography. Abgaryan’s "Compagnie des 5 roues" theaterical group and the actor himself filled the stage with bunch of emotions. Abgaryan's original performance was a great success not only in France, but also in a number of countries around the world. The Yerevan audience also highly appreciated the performance, as evidenced by the 10-minute non-stop applause after the end, which forced the actors to return to the stage again and again.

The performance "Electra from the world of miserables" is a powerful reinterpretation of an ancient Greek myth. This touching performance, set in the poorest district of Argos, completely transforms the classic story of revenge. Electra, a former princess and now a brothel maid, burns with anger and despair, waiting for the return of her brother Orestes. Together they will confront the tyranny of their mother, Clytemnestra. The performance is accompanied by the lively rock-n-roll of the Howlin' Jaws group, shocking choreography and a chorus of voices that bring each scene to life.

“When we founded the Yerevan International Theater Festival, naturally, many people did not believe in us and did not trust us. Back then, our goal was to bring the best to Yerevan, and I think we are succeeding in that, and on behalf of the festival, I want to express my deep gratitude to Simon Abgaryan and his entire team, his wonderful artists, and colleagues who have gone through a very interesting journey with us, and today we see the happy faces of our audience,” said Vardan Mkrtchyan, the director of the Sundukyan National Academic Theater.

The Yerevan premiere of the performance was also attended by Olivier Decottignies, the French Ambassador to Armenia, who had awarded Abgaryan the title of Honorary Worker of Culture of France the day before. He noted that as a representative of France, he is glad that such a group has come to Armenia, "who were able to focus everyone around their art."

Simon Abgaryan is today the connecting link between France and Armenia, who, like Aznavour, can be considered 100% Armenian and 100% French, noted Daniel Danielyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia.

"This is the second time I have watched this performance, but I thought that I want to see it again and again. We understood that the most important factor in this work is the work of the director. A lot of work has been done, which is felt. Despite the long texts in French, the performance was understood immediately  thanks to the great work of the director," he said in his speech, recalling how they made the decision to bring the performance to Armenia.

"It was last year when Simon came with the French Minister of Culture, we met with representatives of various structures and institutions, we talked and we definitely wanted Simon to be in Armenia with his French team, to show his art and give us motivation so that we too strive for it. I am sure that we also have those resources to be able to create such a high-level performance. Years ago, Aznavour, who had done great things for French culture, said a very accurate sentence: "I cannot choose between being Armenian or French, I am 100 percent Armenian and 100 percent French." When the great Charles left us, we were wondering who would be the one to maintain these cultural ties, that 100 percent Armenian and French. It seems to me that today we have found the answer in Simon Abgaryan"

Abgaryan added that he chose theater from a young age and considers himself a “theater boy.”

“I’m a theater boy, theater and the language of theater build me. When I was young, I often doubted how I would do it, but I know one thing: there must be artistic demands and truth in collective work. We must be clear in our art. We have worked on this performance like this, and each actor here is already a creative individual with his own history, life, present and past. The actors came from different countries: France, Brazil, England, Italy, Lebanon… but the water of all of us is theater…”, he added.
