French Armenian actor and director Simon Abkarian was awarded the title of Honorary Cultural Figure of France, which was presented to him by the French ambassador to Armenia, Olivier Decottignies. This was announced Thursday at the premiere of Simon Abkarian's play "Electra in the World of the Disadvantaged," which was held within the framework of the Yerevan International Theater Festival at the Gabriel Sundukyan State Academic Theatre.

The Yerevan premiere of the play was attended also by the French ambassador to Armenia, Olivier Decottignies, who noted that as a representative of France, he was glad that such a talented troupe came to Armenia. "They were able to attract everyone's attention with their art," he emphasized.

Simon Abkarian today is a link between France and Armenia, who, like Charles Aznavour, can be considered 100% Armenian and 100% French, noted Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia, Daniel Danielyan.

“Many years ago, Aznavour, who did an incredible amount for French culture, said a very accurate phrase: ‘I cannot choose between being Armenian or French; I am 100% Armenian and 100% French.’ When the great Charles left us, we thought: who will be the one to preserve these cultural ties, who will become that 100% Armenian and French? I think today we have found the answer: Simon Abkarian,” Danielyan added.
