Love in the digital age can get very complicated. A 75-year-old man from China, identified only as Jiang, shocked his family after announcing he wanted to divorce his wife — all because he had fallen head over heels for… an AI chatbot.
According to Beijing Daily, Jiang became obsessed with the virtual companion despite her robotic smile, glitchy lip-syncing, and pre-programmed replies. He would spend hours glued to his phone, waiting for messages where the chatbot sweetly called him “brother” and praised him for being so supportive.
When his wife confronted him, Jiang stunned everyone by declaring that he wanted to leave her and dedicate himself entirely to his digital romance.
His children eventually intervened, pleading with him to come back to reality. Thankfully, Jiang snapped out of it — but for a time, he was genuinely devoted to a “partner” who never truly existed.
This isn’t an isolated case. One Reddit user revealed she discovered her husband had been secretly chatting with multiple anime-style chatbots, exchanging intimate messages. She said it felt like betrayal — with some commenters calling it “emotional cheating.”
On the flip side, others argue that AI chatbots can actually save marriages or serve as “companionship placeholders” when real relationships falter. In one jaw-dropping case, a woman even got engaged to her AI boyfriend, Casper, after just five months of chatting. She admitted she fully understood he was artificial — but wanted to “try a new kind of love.”
