The Tabi sandals with their signature split-toe design have become a hallmark of Maison Margiela, now under the creative direction of Belgian designer Glenn Martens. The former Y/Project head, known for his love of surrealism, continues this vision with his latest project for the avant-garde fashion house, reports Hypebeast.

Today, Maison Margiela unveiled the first edition of the annual tribute to Tabi style — the Tabi Collector’s Series. The limited edition comprises just 25 pairs, each adorned with archival “Broken Mirror” embroidery across the entire surface of the shoe. The iconic model is reimagined through the brand’s years-long experiments with metallic reflection and innovative craftsmanship.
The “Broken Mirror” technique, first introduced in the Artisanal AW15 collection, has been adapted to the Tabi’s three-dimensional form. Previously, under Martens’ predecessor John Galliano, the technique was applied to various garments — from dresses to coats.
Each of the 25 pairs is hand-embroidered and embellished with over 8,000 individually crafted glass beads, sequins, and laser-cut metallic fragments. The design is meticulously conceived to evoke the effect of aged glass with a unique sense of depth. The execution of this project requires the collaboration of 11 specialized artisans.
To honor the artistry behind the shoes, the fashion house will also release a film by Italian director Yuri Ancarani, tracing the Tabi’s journey from initial concept to its final artistic form.
