FDA issues warning: Popular beauty procedure may cause burns, scars, and nerve damage

21:30, November 5

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about a trendy cosmetic treatment, RF microneedling, popular among celebrities, citing reports of serious side effects, according to the New York Post.

Although the procedure is marketed to combat wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and stretch marks, the FDA notes that it carries potentially severe risks.

What is RF Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is a rejuvenation procedure that uses tiny electrodes or microneedles to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process. Like traditional microneedling, it promotes collagen and elastin production, but the addition of radiofrequency energy intensifies the treatment, expanding the list of possible complications.

The FDA warns: “We are aware of serious complications, including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement, and nerve injury associated with the use of RF microneedling devices for dermatological and aesthetic procedures.”

Patients and practitioners alike are urged to understand these potentially dangerous outcomes.

Expert Opinions

Plastic surgeon Rady Rahban highlights a common issue in cosmetic procedures: “The number one problem in plastic surgery is trend-driven dependency. Once a new procedure hits the market, everyone rushes to try it. Surgeons buy the equipment, advertise it, and only then do complications start emerging.”

Rahban notes that RF microneedling falls into this category of problematic trendy treatments. “I love traditional microneedling, but not the radiofrequency version,” he said.

The treatment typically requires 1–3 sessions spaced 2–3 weeks apart, with packages costing $2,000–$5,000. Actress Demi Moore is reportedly a fan, allegedly spending six-figure sums annually on the procedure.

Social Media Reports

Users on platforms like TikTok have shared alarming experiences: “It ruined my face. My skin sagged, and it has never looked worse,” one user wrote.

Others note that the effectiveness and safety of RF microneedling depend heavily on the skill of the practitioner: “RF microneedling only works when managed by an experienced doctor. Knowledge and expertise are critical in choosing a candidate.”

Dr. Rahban emphasizes that he does not want to discourage people from the procedure entirely but stresses that everyone should be fully informed of the risks.
