The Future Laboratory has released its annual report on the future of beauty, wellness, and health, titled The Great Beauty Blur, highlighting trends for 2026 and beyond. The report examines how years of monotony and lack of innovation have sparked a movement of new beauty ideals, poised to shake up the market, according to WWD.
“The past decade has shown that society faces a deepening identity crisis, where appearance is increasingly used as a tool in politics, media, and technology. Beauty style now signals ideology, reinforces hierarchies, and narrows diversity,” said Olivia Houghton, Director of Research & Engagement at The Future Laboratory and head of the beauty division. “‘The Great Beauty Blur’ illustrates why it is crucial for brands and culture creators to understand and challenge these trends before they shape the long-term future of human self-expression.”
The report first analyzes how years of mass trends, the rise of social media, and the use of digital tools such as AI have contributed to a standardized beauty ideal and a deficit of innovation in the category. When certain brands and products dominate the market, others tend to follow rather than create something new. Houghton emphasized that innovation remains a key market driver.
“About 10 percent of annual beauty sales come from truly new innovations, but innovation is challenging because only around 10 percent of new beauty brands survive long-term,” she said.
This repetition is seen as one of the industry’s greatest threats, prompting a rise in trends that deliberately push against the mainstream. The report identifies several emerging movements, including “anti-fluency aesthetics”, featuring bold prosthetics and avant-garde looks. Specific examples include Beetlejuice lips with neon and black pigments creating a cracked effect, and the mask-like glass skin effect showcased in Maison Margiela’s spring show, crafted by Pat McGrath.
The report also notes that brands and creators are increasingly embracing ambiguity, allowing consumers to interpret trends themselves rather than imposing a single prescribed look. This approach presents beauty in a more artistic way. One example is the synesthetic collaboration between Aesop and Jack Coulter, translating scent into visual abstraction.
The Future Laboratory also predicts a revival of local rituals, cultural heritage, and traditional aesthetics, highlighting community-driven projects like the TikTok initiative Black Girls Smell Good. This trend has led to the concept of “stackable beauty”, where multiple approaches layer to create new effects.
Finally, given that product innovation is a key driver for the industry, the report anticipates a new era of ideas emphasizing sensory experiences and a move away from prioritizing digital presence over real-life engagement.
“This is not a complete rejection of technology. The key is for technology to work alongside humans,” Houghton said. The report cites Estée Lauder Companies’ partnership with Exuud as an example, developing a smart scent delivery system that releases fragrance molecules in controlled pulses inspired by how flowers emit scent.
According to The Future Laboratory, these multifaceted efforts toward novelty and breakthrough innovation will be crucial for long-term industry and brand success.
“Beauty has become predictable — and predictability is powerless. Brands that embrace layered experiences, cultural storytelling, and interpretive aesthetics can restore depth, provoke reflection, and rethink how we see ourselves,” the report concludes.
