NYFW officially bans real fur from runways and promotions

13:13, December 8

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), which owns and organizes the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) calendar, has announced that it will no longer promote real fur at official NYFW events. The ban applies to the Fashion Week calendar, social media, and the official website, starting with the upcoming NYFW 2026 season, reports Hypebeast.

“Fur is already rarely seen on NYFW runways, but by taking this stance, the CFDA hopes to inspire American designers to think more deeply about the fashion industry’s impact on animals. Consumers are increasingly rejecting products linked to animal cruelty, and we want American fashion to lead the way while driving innovation in alternative materials,” said CFDA CEO and President Steven Kolb.

The decision follows years of collaboration with Humane World for Animals and Collective Fashion Justice. The CFDA’s policy mirrors London Fashion Week, which banned fur promotion in 2023.

Earlier this year, Condé Nast — owner of Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Glamour — also prohibited fur in editorial content and advertising. Similar measures have since been adopted by other fashion publications, including ELLE and InStyle.
