A Sicilian man has filed a lawsuit against a restaurant in Catania after a video of his secret date with a lover went viral on TikTok, ultimately leading to the collapse of his marriage.
According to The Times, the 42-year-old had told his wife he was attending a business dinner. In reality, he spent the evening at the restaurant with another woman — and the encounter was captured on camera. The video, filmed for promotional purposes by the restaurant, was posted on social media.
The man’s wife saw the clip and soon announced that she intended to leave him.
Now, the Italian consumer rights group Codacons has stepped in, representing the man and seeking compensation. The organization claims the restaurant did not obtain the customer’s consent to film and publish the video, potentially violating Italian privacy laws.
“It is unacceptable for a restaurant to film its clients without explicit permission and post the footage online, exposing individuals to unpredictable consequences,” said Francesco Tanasi, spokesperson for Codacons.
He added that in cases like this, publishing such a video can have “extremely serious effects on a person’s private and family life.” If the restaurant refuses to resolve the dispute, Codacons plans to take the case to Italy’s data protection authority.
