Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of luxury conglomerate LVMH, has officially entered the annals of French history. The billionaire was inducted into the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences in Paris during a ceremonial event attended by France’s elite, including First Lady Brigitte Macron, reports WWD.
The ceremony saw Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, business titans Vincent Bolloré, Martin Bouygues, and Rodolphe Saadé, alongside LVMH designers Jonathan Anderson, Pharrell Williams, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Sarah Burton, and Victoire de Castellane. Under the grand dome of the Institut de France, Arnault was formally recognized as one of the nation’s leading business figures.

Members of the Academy are known as “Immortals”, a symbolic title that aligns with Arnault’s plans to continue leading LVMH until age 85, despite ongoing speculation about succession. His five children — Delphine, Antoine, Alexandre, Frédéric, and Jean — were seated together, while his wife Hélène Mercier-Arnault sat front row alongside Macron.
During the nearly two-hour ceremony, accompanied by speeches and a virtuoso performance by Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich, Arnault received a ceremonial sword engraved with his initials and a handle shaped like a flying fish — designed specifically for him by the late architect Frank Gehry, who previously collaborated with Arnault on the iconic Fondation Louis Vuitton building.
In his speech, Arnault paid tribute to Denis Kessler, late CEO of reinsurer Scor, reflecting on their shared entrepreneurial vision. He recalled a 1969 trip to the U.S., where the pair were inspired by the anti-war and civil rights movements and the Beat Generation, saying:
“For young people of our generation from the French provinces, the U.S. was a revelation — a land of scale and freedom. We realized that anything is possible if you have the energy, optimism, and determination.”
Designer Jonathan Anderson created Arnault’s ceremonial uniform with abstract olive-leaf embroidery, reflecting his revolutionary approach to business. Anderson said, “He built an empire — and to do that, you need a revolutionary spirit.”

Former European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet highlighted Arnault’s journey from the family construction business Ferret-Savinel to acquiring the bankrupt textile conglomerate Boussac Saint-Frères, eventually transforming LVMH into the world’s largest luxury group with 75 brands, including Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon, Tiffany & Co., and Sephora.
Former finance minister Bruno Le Maire detailed the symbolism of the ceremonial sword: the blue orb represents determination and creativity, while an engraved quote from Einstein, “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” captures Arnault’s visionary spirit. The handle also features his children’s initials set with gemstones — a nod to family values.

Sidney Toledano, Arnault’s long-time adviser, called the event “a historic moment that fully recognizes both the professional and personal qualities of Bernard Arnault.”
The guest list read like a who’s who of French luxury and culture, including LVMH executives, architects, gallery owners, and ambassadors from the U.S., Italy, Japan, and South Korea. The ceremony became a showcase of French elegance, seamlessly blending culture and business, and confirmed Arnault’s status as one of the most influential figures in global luxury.
