A Minneapolis meteorologist has gone viral after posting photos and a video of a fork holding a plate of completely frozen spaghetti — a scene that looks straight out of a science fiction film. The footage was shot in a backyard on a wooden deck, where the brutal cold has seemingly frozen everything in its path.

“Early this morning in Minneapolis, the temperature dropped to –29.4 °C, with a wind chill down to –42 °C. Of course, I had to conduct a spaghetti experiment,” Jennifer McDermed wrote in a post on X on Friday.

The video, which has already amassed nearly 8 million views, left social media users both stunned and amused.

Interestingly, a similar “frozen spaghetti trick” was replicated by Michigan resident Rachel Whipple, according to News Channel 3, which reported it took just 20 minutes for the pasta to freeze on the fork.

The frigid weather has now spread across much of the country — Winter Storm Fern is already bringing more than 30 cm (12 inches) of snow to New York City. Forecasters estimate that over 140 million people could be affected, and at least 22 states have declared a state of emergency.

New York City’s  mayor Zohran Mamdani has warned that temperatures next week could be the lowest the city has seen in years.
