Steven Spielberg is returning to a subject that has fascinated him since childhood — extraterrestrial life. Universal Pictures recently released a behind-the-scenes video for his upcoming film Disclosure Day, in which the 79-year-old director reflects on his lifelong fascination with the unexplained.
“I’ve always been captivated by things that can’t be explained. I’ve made countless films about what lies beyond the ordinary — from sharks to flying saucers,” Spielberg says in the clip.
He recalls spending hours as a child staring at the night sky, gradually becoming convinced that life beyond Earth is not just a possibility, but a certainty. “Not merely a possibility, but a guarantee that life exists beyond our planet,” the director emphasizes.
Spielberg first teased footage from Disclosure Day last December. The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. The project is based on an original concept by Spielberg himself, with a script by David Koepp, who also wrote Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds.
In the new video, Spielberg raises questions he believes millions of people are asking today: “Interest in what’s happening not just in our skies, but in our reality, has reached a critical point. We all wonder: are we alone in the universe? And if someone knows we’re not, why haven’t they told us yet?”
While plot details remain under wraps, it is known that the story will revolve around the official confirmation of extraterrestrial life. The project description teases: “If you were shown proof that we are not alone, would it scare you? This summer, the truth will reach 7 billion people. We are approaching… Disclosure Day.”
The new film appears to be Spielberg revisiting the fears and fantasies of his own childhood — much like his previous semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans.
Disclosure Day is scheduled for release on June 12.
