Twin Towers rise again: 2 World Trade Center breaks ground 25 years after 9/11

20:31, February 26

Nearly a quarter-century after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, when terrorists destroyed the Twin Towers, Manhattan is set to see the final piece of the World Trade Center complex rise: 2 World Trade Center.

The new 55-story skyscraper will serve as the global headquarters for American Express and stand as a symbol of New York City’s resilience, renewal, and ambition.

Governor Kathy Hochul and American Express executives announced that construction could begin this spring, creating thousands of union jobs and generating billions of dollars in economic benefits for both the city and the state. Estimates suggest the tower alone could contribute between $5.9 billion and $6.3 billion to the local and state economy.

The project is being developed by Silverstein Properties, with the iconic Foster + Partners leading the architectural design. The tower promises cutting-edge features, including green terraces, rooftop gardens, panoramic views of Manhattan, energy-efficient systems, smart technology, and LEED certification, emphasizing environmental responsibility.

According to Stephen Squeri, CEO of American Express, the new headquarters will be “a place of inspiration, collaboration, and growth,” accommodating 10,000 employees in a modern and comfortable work environment.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani highlighted that the project is more than an investment—it’s “a tribute to union labor and the dignity of the workers who build this city.”

After decades of financial, architectural, and logistical hurdles, as well as delays caused by the 2020 pandemic, the tower is finally taking shape. 2 World Trade Center will complete the complex alongside 1 World Trade Center, other office towers, and the 9/11 Memorial, marking the culmination of Ground Zero’s long revival and symbolizing the enduring strength and global significance of New York City.
