Christine Cabot, 53, a top executive at the startup Astronomer, became the target of an online firestorm — all in just 16 seconds. It happened at a Coldplay concert in Boston when the “kiss cam” caught her in the arms of the company’s CEO, Andy Byron. On the surface, nothing seemed unusual — just 16 fleeting seconds. But social media turned that moment into a global scandal.
The clip went viral almost immediately on TikTok, racking up over a billion views. Within days, Cabot was forced to step down from her role, while online harassment continued unabated. She received hundreds of calls daily, along with threats and insults. Users labeled her a “homewrecker” and a “gold digger,” and the vitriol took a serious toll on her reputation.
“It was deeply gendered,” Cabot admits. “What hurt the most was seeing other women attack me.” She continues to ask herself why humans take pleasure in witnessing someone else’s suffering. “Why are women willing to devour each other alive?” she asks.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Cabot described how social media algorithms turn human humiliation into billions of dollars for tech companies. “The more pain and suffering, the more money is made,” she said.
Cabot stresses that she does not excuse the circumstances that made the video go viral, but believes the experience serves as a cautionary tale: the culture we’ve built online often rewards cruelty and public shaming. She thinks about the moment every day, questioning why it escalated so quickly.
Today, her hope is that the conversation shifts away from scandal and toward a deeper discussion about empathy, responsibility, and the influence of algorithms. What lasted only 16 seconds on screen has echoed through Cabot’s life for months, leaving a powerful takeaway: women need to be kinder to one another.
