The chances of a close encounter with extraterrestrials in New York are reportedly higher than ever. According to the annual ranking by Casino.ca, released to mark National Alien Abduction Day on March 20, New York ranks third in the U.S. for UFO sightings.

Since 1974, the state has reported 8,314 UFO sightings, roughly one for every 1,003 residents. That places it just behind Washington (one per 977 residents) and Delaware, the top-ranked state (one per 928 residents).

“Most sightings are likely due to the sheer number of people here—many of whom don’t know what they’re looking at,” said Dennis Anderson, a former member of the Center for UFO Studies.

Recent reports in New York included a white, Tic-Tac-shaped object in the sky and a silver orb hovering above the city. More recently, three mysterious glowing dots appeared over Corona, Queens—coincidentally the location of the climactic scene in the 1997 sci-fi movie Men in Black—sparking fresh conspiracy theories.

Famous past cases include the “Arthur Kill Lights” in 2001, when five to sixteen bright orange ovals flew in a V formation over the water between New Jersey and Staten Island. One of the most infamous incidents remains the alleged abduction of Linda Napolitano from her Lower Manhattan apartment in 1989, chronicled in a 2024 Netflix documentary.

Still, Anderson urges caution: “Probably 99% of what people report as UFOs in New York are just things they don’t recognize. The city is full of light pollution, and people don’t look up enough.”

For the study, Casino.ca analyzed 150,000 UFO reports collected by the National UFO Reporting Center between 1974 and 2026 and cross-referenced them with social media data. The U.S. has seen 187,870 total sightings, giving the odds of an “intergalactic abduction” roughly 1 in 1,770.

As the site notes: “You never know when an extraterrestrial in a big green spaceship might make a surprise visit.”

The state least likely to see alien abductions is Louisiana, with 1,325 sightings—or one per 3,464 residents.
