$40M ‘immortality fund’ aiming to ‘make death optional’: inside the billionaire-backed race to beat aging”

A growing wave of ultra-wealthy investors and scientists is pouring billions into efforts to extend human life — and potentially delay death itself — turning what was once science fiction into a rapidly expanding field of biotechnology.

The idea of defeating mortality has long existed in culture, from The Picture of Dorian Gray to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. But today, longevity research has become a serious scientific and financial frontier, backed by more than $5 billion in investment from figures such as Peter Thiel, Jeff Bezos and Sam Altman, according to reports.

This elite group is focused on slowing aging at the molecular level, while others fund research into age-related diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Among the most radical initiatives is Singapore-based longevity fund Immortal Dragons, which openly promotes the goal of extreme life extension under the provocative slogan: “Make Death Optional.”

The $40 million “Immortal Dragons” fund

The fund is led by 34-year-old CEO Boyang Wang, who became interested in preventive medicine after suffering a severe allergic reaction that left him unconscious for nearly an hour. The incident, later traced to a buckwheat allergy, pushed him to think about a future where diseases could be prevented before they appear.

In December 2023, Wang launched Immortal Dragons, investing around $4 million from family and friends and $36 million of his own capital. The fund focuses on so-called “moonshot” projects — high-risk, high-reward scientific ventures.

Radical biotech bets

One of its portfolio companies, Frontier Bio, is developing 3D bioprinting technology aimed at creating replacement human organs. If successful, the technology could reduce long transplant waiting lists for kidneys, livers and hearts.

Another startup, backed with $500,000, is working on creating mammals with underdeveloped nervous systems, which could theoretically serve as non-sentient models for medical research — a controversial concept that raises ethical debates about consciousness and animal testing.

The fund also supports Unlimited Bio, which is testing experimental gene therapies, including trials exploring whether combined genetic treatments could slow age-related muscle decline.

Studying the biology of aging

A significant focus of the field is neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Researcher Andy Tsai, a Stanford University postdoctoral fellow, is working with the fund through a four-year partnership.

His work examines genetic traits found in centenarians to understand why some people live significantly longer, healthier lives — and whether those mechanisms can be replicated in younger populations to prevent age-related decline.

Longevity vs. “healthspan”

Scientists say the definition of longevity remains fluid. For some, it means extending lifespan as much as possible. For others, the goal is improving “healthspan” — the number of years lived in good health, rather than prolonged illness in old age.

Critics, however, argue that such projects reflect the interests of ultra-wealthy investors at a time when healthcare costs, inequality and aging populations already strain global systems.

A growing social divide

In the United States, a large share of healthcare spending already goes toward elderly care through programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Supporters argue that extending healthy lifespans could ultimately reduce pressure on healthcare systems and caregiving infrastructure.

Despite controversy, researchers like Tsai maintain that longevity science could benefit people across all age groups — particularly those in their 40s and 60s, when early intervention may prevent chronic disease.

For now, the debate continues: is longevity research the next major scientific breakthrough — or an expensive experiment in billionaire-driven dreams of defying death?
