Gucci revives iconic £1,100 silk shirt worn by Kate Moss and Madonna

11:34, April 27

Gucci has returned to its archives to bring back one of the most recognisable pieces of 1990s fashion — a pale blue silk shirt that became a defining symbol of the decade’s style.

The look was first introduced by designer Tom Ford in 1995, when a 21-year-old Kate Moss walked the runway wearing the glossy blue shirt paired with velvet trousers, creating what would become one of the era’s most iconic fashion moments.

The same ensemble was later worn by Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards that year, cementing its status as a cultural and fashion landmark.

Now, 31 years later, the shirt has been reintroduced by Gucci under creative director Demna Gvasalia. The updated version features in the brand’s “Generation Gucci” line and is priced at approximately £1,100.

Demand for the archival piece has been strong, with original versions selling for thousands on resale platforms. One example reportedly fetched nearly £3,800 — several times its original retail price.

Although Demna did not include the shirt in Gucci’s debut Milan show, its return to the collection is seen as a clear nod to the brand’s heritage. Gucci says the new line is designed to merge different eras of its design history into a unified fashion narrative.

The revival of the piece underscores a recurring theme in fashion: some looks do not simply endure over time — they become part of it.
