Instagram has carried out one of the largest “clean-ups” in its history, causing hundreds of thousands of accounts to suddenly lose followers. Users around the world noticed abrupt drops in follower counts, while social media platforms were flooded with discussions of the so-called “Great Instagram Purge of 2026.”

Although Meta has not yet issued a detailed official statement, multiple sources confirm that this is a systematic removal of bots, fake followers, and inactive accounts — not real users unfollowing celebrities.

What Happened

According to social media reports and leaked information, Instagram carried out an overnight wave of account removals as part of a new moderation strategy.

The purge targeted:

• bots and automated accounts
• purchased followers from third-party services
• inactive profiles
• accounts flagged for “inauthentic behavior”

Users on Threads reported that millions of accounts may have been deactivated within a short time window, triggering sharp drops in follower counts for influencers and celebrities.

Scale of the Impact

Small and mid-sized creators reportedly lost around 2–5% of their followers, but the biggest impact was seen on major public accounts, where bot followers are typically more concentrated.

At the same time, activity on Threads surged, as users rushed to discuss the sudden disappearance of followers and share screenshots of their losses.

The cleanup affected some of the world’s biggest celebrities — from musicians and models to global sports icons.

Cristiano Ronaldo — around -18 million followers

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was reportedly the biggest loser in the purge.

Sources estimate his account lost approximately 18 million followers, making it the largest drop among all public figures.

Lionel Messi — around -8 million followers

World Cup winner Lionel Messi also saw a significant decline.

His account reportedly dropped from around 515 million to 507 million followers — a loss of roughly 8 million followers.

Other Major Celebrity Losses

Several major global stars were also affected:

• Kylie Jenner — up to -15 million followers
• BLACKPINK — around -10 million followers
• Selena Gomez — around -6 million followers

These changes reflect a broad statistical correction across some of the most-followed accounts on the platform.

Why Instagram Did It

The purge is linked to Instagram’s new policy aimed at improving audience quality and fighting artificial growth.

Key reasons include:

• cracking down on follower inflation
• removing inactive accounts
• filtering spam and bot activity
• updating recommendation algorithms

Reports also suggest Instagram is testing new AI systems designed to detect user behavior patterns and identify “coordinated inauthentic activity.”
