The milestone comes after another explosive weekend, with the film dropping just a record-breaking 7% in its fourth week and adding $25.6 million. This marks the strongest fourth-week hold ever for a horror title and the best fourth weekend performance in the genre’s history. The previous benchmark was set by The Blair Witch Project, which saw a 9% drop and $24.2 million in its fourth weekend back in 1999.

From YouTube to Hollywood’s Big League

Curry Barker shot Obsession independently on a micro-budget of just $750,000, working with relatively unknown actors. Before his breakout success, he was best known for short-form horror projects like The Chair, a found-footage-style short film, and Milk & Serial, which he released for free on YouTube, as well as his sketch channel “That’s a Bad Idea,” co-run with collaborator Cooper Tomlinson.

Obsession has instantly propelled Barker into Hollywood’s top tier, making him one of the industry’s most in-demand new directors.

Reports also suggest Barker has already completed his next project, Anything But Ghosts, and has been tapped to direct a new installment in the cult franchise The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24.
