Clothing for Androids: Hansae Creates the World's First Wardrobe for Humanoid Robots

22:33, July 6

South Korean company Hansae—one of the world's largest apparel manufacturers, which produces collections for giants like Gap, Carhartt, Target, and Walmart—has decided to stay ahead of the curve. While fashion houses debate human trends, Hansae asked a question few in the industry have dared to voice: What will humanoid robots wear when they enter our homes and offices?

The company presented its answer at a unique exhibition in Seoul titled "Wear the Future." It marks Korea's first-ever showcase of high-tech clothing designed specifically for android robots, WWD reports.

Robo-Fashion as an Extension of Functional Design

For Hansae, which was among the first to implement 3D virtual design and AI-driven pattern making, this step is a logical evolution of its business. As IT giants race to build the perfect humanoid, the Korean manufacturer is shaping an entirely new market. "Clothing for humanoids isn't a fundamentally different field; rather, it's a reimagining of our experience in creating functional apparel for humans, adapted to new realities," explains Ji Yeon Shon, R&D Director at Hansae. "An android resembles a human but is built differently. The design must be completely re-engineered to account for batteries, sensors, joint structures, and heat dissipation."

When developing the clothing, engineers faced highly specific challenges:

  • Thermoregulation: Instead of conventional fabrics, cooling and heat-dissipating materials are used. Ventilation meshes and channels are positioned precisely around actuators and batteries to prevent the robot from overheating during prolonged operation.

  • Freedom of Movement and Protection: Seams around the elbows, shoulders, and knees are either completely absent or made from ultra-durable stretch materials that do not interfere with the mechanics.

  • Sensor Access: The clothing features architectural cutouts to ensure the android's cameras, radars, and sensors remain unobstructed.

  • Easy Dressing: Since robots cannot dress themselves yet, the garments are equipped with magnets, Velcro, removable modules, and convenient zippers.

From Nanny Robots to Rugged Laborers

The exhibition collection, created in collaboration with Hansae's fashion division, Hansae MK, and their streetwear brand The B Archive, split future "clients" into two categories:

  1. Domestic Companions: The Hearty concept—an emotional support robot dressed in soft knitwear featuring a gentle "hug-pressure" function—alongside caregiver and nanny robots designed to look cozy and safe to humans.

  2. Industrial Specialists: Uniforms for robots employed in hazardous manufacturing, smart farming, auto repair shops, and fitness coaching. By incorporating a vintage streetwear aesthetic, the clothing gained both technical utility and aesthetic individuality.

A Glimpse Into the Future

According to analysts' forecasts, the humanoid robot market is expected to grow into hundreds of billions of dollars over the coming decades. Hansae's leadership openly admits that robot clothing is currently in the research and development stage, and mass commercial sales are still a long way off.

Nevertheless, the company has already initiated talks with robotics manufacturers and smart-material startups.

"Humanoid fashion is a future no one has stepped into yet," concludes Diamond Ik Whan Kim, CEO of the company. "Whoever knows how to sew great clothes for humans will be able to dress robots too. And we intend to lead this movement."
