15:25, July 20

Daily Mail has revealed the fascinating family history of 29-year-old artist and filmmaker Eleanor "Ellie" Exerdjian, following her engagement to Sam Chatto—who is 30th in line to the British throne.

Royal watchers eagerly celebrated the news this week of the engagement between Sam Chatto, grandson of Princess Margaret, and his longtime girlfriend, Eleanor Exerdjian.

The 29-year-old Chatto, son of Queen Elizabeth II's niece Lady Sarah Chatto and her husband Daniel Chatto, works professionally as a ceramicist. He popped the question to Ellie with a hand-crafted porcelain ring he created himself.

King Charles III has already been informed of the engagement and expressed his sincere delight for the couple. The wedding is set to take place next spring.

While Sam's family tree includes the entire British monarchy, Eleanor’s lineage is equally captivating—spanning ties to the global art world elite, a World War II hero, and roots tracing back to Armenian nobility.

The Art Elite: Renowned Parents and an Ivy League Brother

Eleanor was born in 1996 in Westminster, London, into the family of a celebrated art historian and a prominent art critic.

  • Her father, Professor David Ekserdjian, is a renowned expert on the Italian Renaissance. He began his career at the Christie’s auction house, edited Apollo magazine, held professorial positions at Oxford and the Courtauld Institute of Art, and currently serves as Professor Emeritus at the University of Leicester.

  • Her mother, Susan Moore, is an art critic and Financial Times correspondent with a 40-year career, an author of artist biographies, and the founder of the Slow Art Workshop project.

  • Her brother, Alexander Ekserdjian, graduated from Oxford, earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York, and now works as an assistant professor of ancient art at prestigious Yale University.

Ellie’s parents reside in a historic 14th-century manor valued at £2.2 million in Northamptonshire.

A War Hero and Armenian Heritage: The Ancestral Story

Despite growing up in the UK, Eleanor boasts a rich Armenian heritage. In his engagement announcement post, Sam Chatto shared a photograph of the couple taken in Yerevan.

Her grandfather, Colonel Nubar Martin Ekserdjian, had a distinguished military career in the British Army. For his outstanding service during World War II, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt personally awarded him the Legion of Merit in 1942.

Furthermore, according to family lore, Eleanor’s grandfather descended from the Amiras—a class of Armenian nobility that held immense influence and financial power within the Ottoman Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Born into a family of art historians, Ellie chose the path of an abstract painter and video artist. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh (where she met Sam in 2021 while he was studying history of art) and later attended the Royal Drawing School in London.

Her debut short film, Imagined Landscapes (2024), features footage of Armenian landscapes and medieval monasteries captured during her first visit to her ancestral homeland in 2022. The film was screened at the Armenian Film Festival in London.

That journey also inspired her series of paintings titled We Are Our Mountains, which enjoyed successful exhibitions at Messums galleries in London and New York.

Sam Chatto has long served as a muse for his fiancé; she has featured him in several of her graphic works and portraits.

A Warm Welcome into the Royal Family

The Royal Family has welcomed Eleanor with open arms. She has already accompanied Sam to Christmas celebrations at Sandringham in 2024, attended Peter Phillips’ wedding in June, and spent time at the Castle of Mey in Scotland alongside King Charles III.

The couple currently shares an art studio in West Sussex, where Sam creates handcrafted ceramics while Ellie paints and works on her films.
