While audiences are busy wondering how Matt Damon bulked up his biceps for his role as Odysseus, the actor himself is raving about the muscle power of his 34-year-old stunt double, Devyn Dalton.
If you’ve already watched Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and found yourself asking how many hours Matt Damon spent in the gym sculpting those impressive arms—you’ve been looking for answers in the wrong place.

When Odysseus fought the Laestrygonians during his deadly ten-year journey, it was actually Devyn Dalton—a 4-foot-5 (135 cm) stuntwoman—stepping into the fray. By Damon’s own admission, she has "the most incredible set of arms" he has ever seen.
Dalton is a Canadian actress, stunt performer, motion-capture artist, voice actor, and dancer. Speaking with The Post, she shared that she has always loved movement and storytelling, eventually channeling those passions into an impressive career. "People usually say 'stuntman,' but what about stuntwomen? The journey to carve out a path for myself in this industry was a long one," the 34-year-old performer shared.
Shorter in stature but immensely powerful, Dalton launched her stunt career right after high school, landing the role of Cornelia in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
That project served as her introduction to motion-capture technology. For the physically grueling role, she underwent three weeks of intensive "ape training"—learning to move exclusively on all fours.
Dalton admits that conveying a primate’s raw emotion while enduring intense physical strain was no easy task, but the fusion of acting and physical performance is her "absolute favorite thing." She went on to reprise her work in the franchise as Cornelius in War for the Planet of the Apes and doubled as Caesar for select scenes in Rise.

As her career took off, Dalton never stopped training. The life of a stunt double demands a constantly evolving toolkit: from martial arts to stage combat and weapons handling.
"Physically, I’m always ready because the call can come at any second. Sometimes you only get a week to prepare," she explained.
Dalton hits the gym daily, combining yoga, strength training, boxing, and sword fighting—even when she isn't actively filming.
Landing a major role in The Odyssey felt like the ultimate payoff after years of hard work. Building her career from scratch without industry connections, Dalton considers trust and reputation her greatest assets. "Opportunities like this come down to your reputation. It doesn't happen overnight. I’ve been building my entire career preparing for something like this," the stuntwoman explains.

Today, Dalton boasts over 60 credits to her name, including The Last of Us and the blockbuster Godzilla. Once confirmed for The Odyssey, she immediately brought on a trainer to sharpen her strength and combat skills to perfection.
Dalton’s height actually became her biggest advantage on set. Battling 6-foot-7 stunt performers created a natural "forced perspective" effect—what she describes as true movie magic. (And yes, in those promotional stills of Odysseus, that’s actually her in the shot!)
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Damon admitted that after meeting Dalton, he gave her a hug and thanked her for her monumental effort. The Oscar winner noted that while there are many shots in the film where giant figures tower over his character, those scenes were actually shot with the actors towering over Dalton. "I was deeply moved that Matt publicly highlighted our work," Dalton says. "It’s high time we shine a light on the work of female stunt performers."
Throughout her career, skepticism surrounding female physical power and rigid body standards have posed significant hurdles. Yet Dalton believes roles like this are shifting perceptions. "So many women before me broke down those doors, but the fight continues. I hope I can keep paving the way for others."
