"Caveat emptor" (buyer beware) is one of the oldest principles of law. Today, it has become as relevant as ever, all thanks to a pair of wide-leg £25.99 trousers from Zara.
On social media, the garment has already earned the sinister nickname "Zara death pants." Users are posting videos en masse showing themselves getting tangled in the endless fabric, falling, and injuring themselves right on the street.
"Zara trousers should come with a health warning! Now I've got a fractured knee," writes one TikTok user, captioning a video where she rolls out of a hospital in a wheelchair.

Other reported injuries include busted elbows and knees, dislocations, sprains, bruises, and broken nails. Yet despite the warnings and viral notoriety, these oversized, extra-long trousers remain a best-seller, reports The Guardian.
Physical therapists note that injuries caused by wardrobe items are far from rare. While high heels used to be considered the primary enemy of women's health, the exaggerated oversized trend has introduced a new threat.
According to experts, the most common consequences of these falls include:
Wrist fractures: People instinctively throw their hands out to break a fall.
Torn ligaments and dislocations: Caused by feet getting tangled in the loose fabric.
Hip injuries and fractures: Recovery from such trauma can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 9 months.
Brands ranging from Zara to Victoria Beckham and Stella McCartney promote exceptionally long cuts where the fabric dramatically drags along the floor. In Zara's sizing guide, the inseam for a size S measures 108 cm (roughly 42.5 inches) — even though the average height of women, for instance in the UK, is 162.5 cm (about 5'4").
Ruby Slevin, a professional tailor and founder of the brand Banshee of Savile Row, explains that the issue stems from cutting corners on pattern-making:
Using mannequins instead of fit models: To cut costs, fast-fashion brands use stationary dress forms instead of live fit models.
Targeting runway heights: Standard fit models stand at 178 cm (around 5'10") or taller, which drastically differs from the proportions of the average customer.
Disregarding proportions: The length and width of trousers should proportionately match the hip measurements and overall height. Wearing trousers that don't fit your proportions is just like walking around in the wrong shoe size — it is simply unsafe.
Stylists and tailors strongly recommend taking such items to an alteration shop to be hemmed rather than walking around stepping on the fabric.

Fashion historian Virginia Hill reminds us that fashion has periodically demanded real sacrifices from women:
The Hobble Skirt (1910): Designer Paul Poiret created a skirt with an ankle hem so narrow that women could only move in tiny, shuffling micro-steps.
The Isadora Duncan Tragedy (1927): The famous dancer tragically died when her long silk scarf tangled in the spoke wheels of an open-top automobile.
Supermodel Runway Injuries: At shows for Rodarte and Chanel, models repeatedly tore ligaments and broke toes due to extreme runway footwear, forcing some to take multi-year career breaks.
The overarching medical advice remains simple: "Don't wear anything that increases your risk of falling and ending up in the ER — even if it's the biggest trend of the season."
