Former MMA fighter and reality TV star Choo Sung-hoon, who boasts impressive personal wealth, surprised fans with an unexpected act of frugality: he personally climbed into a street storm drain to retrieve an AirPod he accidentally dropped.
The video documenting the bizarre incident was posted on his YouTube channel.
The mishap occurred in Tokyo, where Choo Sung-hoon had arrived on his motorcycle to try some famous tonkatsu. Right as he pulled off his helmet, one of his wireless AirPods slipped out of his ear and fell directly through the grates of a storm drain.
Seeing the earbud floating in the dirty water, the former fighter didn't hesitate for a second. He immediately shed his jacket, pried up the heavy metal drain grate with one hand, and literally leaned head-and-shoulders into the drain to fish out the gadget.
When the production crew asked Choo why someone at his income level wouldn't simply buy a replacement pair, he answered with total seriousness:
"To live well, you have to be frugal. AirPods are actually more expensive than I thought right now. The prices have gone up quite a bit, so just going out to buy new ones isn't such an easy decision."
The camera crew joked that they finally understood how people get rich, announcing they'd start climbing into storm drains too.
Viewers in the comment section praised the athlete's actions, highlighting that true wealth lies in respecting your possessions and money.
The crew's surprise at his refusal to just "buy new ones" didn't come out of nowhere. Choo Sung-hoon recently gave a tour of his luxurious apartment located in an elite Tokyo neighborhood, valued at roughly 5 billion won (around $3.7 million). After building a wildly successful career in MMA, he continued to rake in millions starring in hit TV shows, brand endorsements, and running his own media ventures.
