The era of the "gold digger" is fading into the past: modern successful women no longer hide the fact that they are looking for financial stability, openly rethinking dating culture with affluent partners, the New York Post writes.
Ten years ago, the idea of a young woman entering into a financial relationship with a man (often much older than her) was considered practically taboo. Today, many women approach their romantic future openly, betting on pragmatism.
As New York divorce attorney James Sexton notes, modern demanding women are not inventing anything new—they are simply rebranding ancient traditions: "All relationships are economics. And economics is an exchange of values. The difference today is not that money has suddenly become important, but that people feel increasingly comfortable stating it openly."
Under conditions where it is increasingly difficult for Americans to succeed economically, the concept of traditional roles—where one partner earns and provides for the family while the second creates comfort—is experiencing a powerful renaissance. This is also confirmed by the viral popularity of the "trad wife" trend on social media.
Conversations about money, ambition, and lifestyle expectations, which were previously considered impolite, are now becoming a standard topic for a first date.
Wedding coach Drew Henry notes that openly voicing one's demands saves a mass of time. One of his clients explicitly writes in her profile: "The one thing I will never do again is fly economy." Another client, even before the first date, asks men directly whether they plan to pay the bill or split it in half.
Men, according to experts, often react positively to such directness, as the rules of the game become transparent from the very first minutes.
