$10 million in gold: Construction workers in Belgium accidentally discover a treasure trove while laying sewage pipes

14:22, August 15

An ordinary renovation project in Belgium unexpectedly turned into a plot straight out of an adventure movie: on Tuesday, construction workers stumbled upon a treasure worth over $10 million while installing a new sewage system.

"Our first reaction was disbelief," 18-year-old student and construction laborer Kobe shared in an interview with local outlet VRT. "Of course, we never expected to find gold."

The team was renovating a building in the Flemish municipality of Sint-Gillis-Waas (Dendermonde area), about a 40-minute drive from Brussels.

The workers were removing old foundations to install pipes when "suddenly we saw something lying in the ground," Kobe recalled.

At first, the builders thought they were looking at a stash of ordinary 1-euro coins, but quickly realized their mistake upon spotting a gold nugget.

"I went over and picked the gold up in my hands," said foreman Mario, who has worked in construction for 33 years. "We just kept unearthing more and more coins and bars. Only then did it really sink in what we had found. It was a crazy feeling."

In total, the value of the discovered bars and coins is estimated at around 9 million euros (about $10.4 million).

To the workers' disappointment, the law was not on the finders' side in this situation: the crew had to hand the precious metal over to the police, as appropriating someone else's property is illegal.

"With that many coins and bars, trying to hide them would have been practically impossible," Mario reasoned. "Besides, that's just plain theft."

The treasure is currently under the control of CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a social support organization for residents of Dendermonde. The organization hopes to use the funds for charity.

The news quickly attracted crowds of curious "treasure hunters," forcing local police to issue a warning urging people to stay away from the dangerous construction site where full demolition work is underway.

Historian and former Dendermonde mayor Piet Buyse suggests that the hoard may belong to a prominent local brewing family, the Van Assches.

Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the fortune. If no owner comes forward, the discovered gold may be split between the finder and the property owner (provided the treasure is not linked to criminal activity).

Kobe the student hopes his involvement in the historic find won't go unnoticed: "Of course, we are hoping for a 'finder's fee,'" he said. "That would be nice."
