The couple had planned an unforgettable day at the Met, but their visit was marred by an awkward incident. A woman named Lina was standing with her boyfriend in front of the museum’s stained-glass gallery when he suddenly dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring.

But the couple barely had time to enjoy the moment before a security guard intervened.

The museum employee interrupted the proposal, bluntly ordering the young man to “get up” and telling the couple’s friend to stop filming.

According to Lina, the guard claimed that marriage proposals were prohibited inside the museum — a rule she said does not actually exist. The bride-to-be said she was deeply offended by the employee’s behavior, describing him as “tactless and condescending.” After the stressful encounter, the couple headed to Shake Shack to calm down.

Video of the incident quickly spread on Instagram, garnering more than 55,000 views. Social media users reacted angrily to the guard’s actions. Many pointed out that hundreds of photos and videos of proposals at the Met over the years can easily be found online.

Commenters agreed that even if the museum has strict rules, the guard could have shown some humanity and allowed the couple to finish their special moment before explaining the regulations.

“Understanding the rules is important, but so is flexibility. Actions like this only damage the public’s perception of security staff,” one outraged user wrote.

Despite the ruined proposal, the couple — both lifelong New Yorkers who met at the very same museum several years ago — still plan to get married.

“Of course this had to happen — on the one day, a man with a superiority complex had to be on duty and decided to ruin a once-in-a-lifetime moment,” Lina said.
