Rumer Willis, the 38-year-old actress and eldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, has decided to take proactive steps to protect her health as her father continues to battle a serious illness.

The 71-year-old actor has been living with frontotemporal dementia for several years. To assess her own potential risks, Rumer underwent an ApoE genetic test as part of a partnership with wellness platform Function, People reports. The test helps determine a person’s genetic predisposition to developing Alzheimer’s disease.

“Getting answers can sometimes be scary,” the actress said. “Obviously, there is a genetic predisposition in my family. And it’s not just dementia — some of my relatives have had breast cancer and other health issues.”

At the same time, Rumer believes that having information gives people greater control over their health. “When we know what we may be predisposed to, we can actively work on reducing inflammation in the body, taking care of our heart health and taking preventive measures,” she said.

Previously, in a video for Function’s social media channels, Rumer spoke candidly about the emotions her family has been experiencing.

“I really miss my dad. I miss the version of him that he used to be. There are days that are incredibly difficult. But I try to focus on being there for him in the here and now. Real strength lies in being able to hold both sides of that reality,” she said.

According to the actress, her test results came back “within the average range” — meaning she does have a genetic risk, but it is not considered significant.
