Kenyan farmer Charles Onsombi was driven to fury and personally demolished his home’s kitchen after his wife claimed she had seen an image of the Virgin Mary in the soot covering one of the walls. The story quickly spread across social media, and before long, thousands of pilgrims began flocking to the house.

It all began when the farmer’s wife, Mary, was preparing food in the kitchen. On a clay wall covered in black soot, she allegedly noticed an image that gradually appeared to take the shape of a woman wearing a long veil with her hands clasped in prayer.

A deeply devout Catholic, Mary believed she had witnessed divine intervention. Shaken by what she had seen, she rushed to her neighbors to tell them about the vision. Residents of Getare village in Kisii County, southwestern Kenya, immediately began filming the wall on their mobile phones, while photographs and reports of the “miracle” spread rapidly across social media.

When 65-year-old Charles returned home after an overnight trip to Mombasa, he was confronted with an extraordinary scene: his house was surrounded by crowds of people eager to see Mary — or, as they hoped, the image of the Virgin Mary herself.

People arrived on motorcycles, in taxis and on buses. Entire church groups made their way to the house, while pastors held sermons right outside the farmer’s home. The enormous crowds eventually prompted a police presence.

Some pilgrims left disappointed, insisting they could see nothing on the wall. Others were convinced they could clearly make out the face of the Virgin Mary.

“I saw it myself. I saw the image and believed it was her,” local resident Brian Nyangau told Citizen TV.

Another pilgrim told K24: “It is the mother of Jesus who has come here.”

Some even called for a church to be built at the site.

The homeowner himself, however, did not believe in the miracle. He admitted that he was bewildered by what was happening and could not understand why an ordinary wall had suddenly become a destination for mass pilgrimage.

He became particularly suspicious of the photographs circulating online. In some images, the clay wall appeared almost completely blank, while in others, a seemingly near-perfect portrait of the Virgin Mary appeared to emerge.

The farmer suggested that the famous image might have been created using artificial intelligence.

“When people started coming, taking pictures and all that, what I see on the internet looks completely different from what is actually here,” he explained.

But the crowds showed no signs of leaving. Pilgrims continued arriving even on Sunday evening, and the homeowner’s patience finally snapped.

Armed with a farm hoe, Charles attacked the wall and literally reduced it to a pile of rubble. “He said his wife had turned the house into a marketplace. He demolished the kitchen himself because he could no longer cope with the crowds, and warned everyone not to enter his property again,” sugarcane seller Kallen Kemunto told the Daily Nation.

The destruction of the wall did not immediately stop the pilgrims. People continued flocking to the house even though there was virtually nothing left to see.

At one point, the farmer grabbed a machete and began threatening the unwanted visitors. “If you want this demolished clay, tell me — I can put it into bags and give it to you,” he shouted at the stunned pilgrims.

“He has completely lost it. He is chasing away everyone he sees. He says there is no image of the Virgin Mary in his kitchen,” a local resident said.

After the kitchen was destroyed, interest in the site gradually began to fade, and the number of pilgrims dropped sharply within a few days.

Some local residents, however, felt that Charles had made yet another mistake — destroying an opportunity to make money from the suddenly popular pilgrimage site.
