D. Smith, a star of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta and a two-time Grammy-nominated producer, has announced that he is entering a new chapter of his life and returning to living as a man after spending 12 years living publicly as a woman.

The 51-year-old musician made the announcement on Instagram, emphasizing that he has no regrets about his past.

“For most of my life, I’ve followed my heart, even when the path I chose wasn’t easy for others to understand. For the past 12 years, I have publicly lived as a transgender woman. Those years were not a mistake. They were real,” Smith wrote.

Alongside the statement, Smith shared a new photo of himself wearing shorts, a loose-fitting tank top and a durag.

The musician said that the past few months have marked the beginning of a new chapter for him.

“Over the past few months, I have begun a new chapter of my life. Moving forward, I will live and present myself as a man and use he/him pronouns,” Smith announced. “This is not about erasing my past. My 12 years of living as a woman showed me the man I wanted to become,” he said.

Smith also stressed that his love and respect for the transgender community have not changed.

“There is so much more to this journey than can fit into one statement. When the time is right, I will share the full story. For now, thank you for allowing me to continue to grow and for giving me the space I need,” he added.

D. Smith came out as a transgender woman in 2014. He subsequently faced backlash within the music industry. In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, the producer said that some of the recordings he had been preparing for release were pulled, while friends stopped returning his calls.

According to Smith, it took him years to process what had happened.

“People around me loved D. Smith — the man. They trusted that person. Literally one day I was wearing jeans, Timberlands and a trucker hat, and the next day I was wearing blue eyeshadow and high heels,” he recalled. “I didn’t warn people in advance, and you don’t owe anyone an explanation of who you are. But at the same time, how can you realistically expect people to completely accept you right away? That’s actually unfair,” the artist added.

In 2016, Smith joined the fifth season of VH1’s reality series Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. At the time, he became the show’s first openly transgender cast member.

Smith is also known as a singer, songwriter and producer who has worked with Katy Perry, Lil Wayne and CeeLo Green.
