82-year-old Michael Douglas has described himself as a “healthy product of the sixties” while speaking candidly about his eventful love life and numerous romances. The actor has also revealed for the first time that he had a long-standing affair with Kathleen Turner while they were filming together.
In his forthcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas opens up about his many romances over the course of his life. He recalls, in particular, how Catherine Zeta-Jones once gave him an ultimatum: if they were going to continue their relationship, he had to be faithful to her. The actor was then forced to make “five quick phone calls” to women he had been dating.
When a British journalist asked Douglas whether he had ever wondered why he had slept with so many women, the actor replied:
“I don’t know that I slept with that many women. I don’t see it that way. I was a healthy product of the sixties.”
Douglas then reportedly asked, somewhat irritably: “I wonder why, of all the countries and all the press I deal with, the British are so obsessed with questions about sex?”
In his memoir, the actor also categorically rejects rumors that he suffered from sex addiction.
“I was never, for f***’s sake, a sex addict,” he writes, recalling reports from the 1990s claiming that he had undergone treatment for sex addiction.
When the journalist pointed out that his memoir is filled with stories about sex, Douglas pushed back: “I didn’t think so. I mention a couple [of women] in the book.”
The actor also clarified the famous story about the five women he allegedly had to end things with before agreeing to a monogamous relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
“No, no, it wasn’t like that. Catherine said, ‘If we’re going to continue this relationship, I want it to be monogamous.’ So that evening I made a few calls to some women I had been dating — and that was it,” Douglas explained.
He also admitted that Zeta-Jones has not yet read his book. Asked whether he was worried about how she might react to its contents, the actor replied: “She hasn’t read it,” adding that their marriage is currently “in good shape.”
