For Paris Fashion Week guests weary of nightmare traffic jams, air taxis probably cannot arrive on the Uber app quickly enough.
Nicolas Ghesquière, the eternal futurist and devoted fan of “colliding eras,” suspended several dozen windowless, wedge-shaped aircraft high above the paved runway of the Louis Vuitton show, which stretched the entire length of the Louvre’s vast Cour Carrée. Their headlights and taillights looked as though they had been lifted straight from 1970s science-fiction films, while navigation antennas lining the vertical tracks quietly blinked red, creating an almost surreal Blade Runner-like scene, according to WWD.

One of the most striking set designs of the fashion month framed a story about moving through a vast metropolis — a metaphor for today’s turbulent, overheated world. To counter that chaos, Ghesquière proposed clothing that was light, almost ergonomic and designed to move freely with the body.
“I wanted to convey a feeling of simplicity — a kind of striving for purity,” Ghesquière said during a preview. “The idea of lightness, of fluidity, is very important to this collection.”

And indeed, it was one of Louis Vuitton’s most airy, accessible and beautiful collections in recent years. At its core were familiar classic silhouettes — three-hole dresses, cardigans, blousons and pea coats — rendered in ultra-thin, translucent, fluid or paper-like fabrics that practically whispered of luxury and progress.

The colors were barely perceptible, the prints small or deliberately blurred, and the embroidery delicate and restrained. When the models passed close by, it was tempting to study the clothes carefully to catch the details, such as the mesh inserts on some lightweight slip dresses and fitted trousers.

The surface of one fitted leather blouson was covered in a fine raised texture, while most of the tailoring appeared to be made from jersey and knitwear. The clothes moved with the models — springing, swaying and seeming to float through the air.

Other reversible pieces were made from fabrics even lighter than chiffon. According to the designer, most of the coats in the collection weigh less than an ordinary T-shirt.

The show became a true hymn to weightlessness — and a challenge to gravity in every sense.
